Situated in the town of Rockport, a cozy harbor village on Penobscot Bay, the gray and white clapboard Rockport Opera House is located next to Mary Lea Park overlooking picturesque Rockport Harbor. A million-dollar renovation in 1993 has maintained the Rockport Opera House's 19th-century charm while creating a facility with 20th-century conveniences.
The town-owned building, constructed in 1891, is a hub of activity; it rings with music, dance, poetry and plays performed in the air-conditioned 400-seat auditorium. The handicapped-accessible auditorium boasts perfect acoustics, an antique hand-painted curtain, hand-done stenciling and a curved balcony offering wonderful views of the stage. On the lower level of the building there is a charming and comfortable air-conditioned meeting room that accommodates 100 people, wheelchair-accessible restrooms, a green room complex for use by performers and a professionally outfitted kitchen. Designed to present a variety of entertainment forms, the auditorium is a perfect performance space for concerts, recitals and intimate plays. The space is easily adapted for large meetings or seminars and graduation exercises and can be transformed into a wonderful room for a cabaret with tables and chairs. The auditorium is also a charming space for a romantic wedding. After the ceremony, there is ample space for a sit down dinner and dancing - all in one spacious room.
The meeting room on the lower level is perfect for seminars, meetings, lectures, birthday and anniversary parties and dinners. The room contains a raised dais (with a portable lectern) which is ideal for meetings and can serve as a head table or buffet table for weddings and dinners. The fully-equipped kitchen contains a dinner service for 75, cooking utensils, a six-burner, two-oven professional stove with a grill, a large restaurant double refrigerator, freezer, professional capacity dishwasher and ample counter space for food preparation.
Handicapped-accessible rest rooms, a drinking fountain and a public telephone are located in the lower lobby off the meeting room. The lower level can be accessed from the side of the building near a delightful park. The entry hall features a colorful ceramic mural depicting items reminding one of the harbor, sailing, and 19th century harbor industries. The tiles contain the names of some of the contributors to the renovation project. A clothes closet is located in the hall. The air-conditioned green room for performers has a sitting room, separate dressing area and two bathrooms, one with a shower. There is direct access from the green room to the stage above. This room can be used by a bridal party. The Opera House regularly hosts town meetings, the selectmen's meetings, municipal committees meetings and meetings of private organizations. |
